Numerous oil and gas seeps occur on Java Island concealing prospective basin sediments. However, most of this island is covered by volcanic products of Paleogene to Recent times. The volcaniclastic sediments buried the source rocks, burying the source rocks to depths of oil and gas windows. Oil and gas seeps in volcanic areas of Java show the presence of active petroleum systems underneath the volcanic cover. This indicates hydrocarbon prospectivity on Java Island (subvolcanic play) that is so far unexplored. Volcaniclastic covers are notorious for causing poor seismic data quality, making subsurface imaging difficult. This will challenge the methods and techniques of seismic and nonseismic data acquisition and processing. Once these challenges are resolved, the subvolcanic play of Java may be revealed.

This is a review paper on the tectonics, stratigraphy and geochemistry of West Sulawesi Offshore, Indonesia. This paper is presented at the 36th IPA meeting. The increase of exploration activity in West Sulawesi Offshore has enhanced our understanding but, it cannot instantly build a thorough knowledge of the petroleum geology of the area. There have been surprising results, both positive and negative, that were unexpected when compared with the prognoses for the wells drilled recently. It therefore appears that assessing the risk of both plays and prospects in this area is still difficult.

This work that has been presented SEG Annual Meeting, September 18 – 23, 2011 , San Antonio, Texas overviews the petroleum system model in deepwater Makassar Strait basins. Unsuccessful of six expensive exploration wells in this area is a bit much influence to the activities of exploration in the South Makassar Basin. The authors explained exploration opportunities and challenges in an effort to discover hydrocarbons in the deep water Makassar Strait Basins.
This work has been presented at INDONESIAN PETROLEUM ASSOCIATION, Thirty-Sixth Annual Convention & Exhibition, May 2012. The authors of this article explained paleotectonic evaluation of the WMO area, and suggests another potential play other than Kujung Formation. Seismic interpretation with some attributes and also ant-track method are applied to strengthen the exploration concept. Another play that is quite interesting should be added to exploration in this area. Syn-rift play can be found in the western and eastern flank of JS-1 with Ngimbang Formation as the objective, whilst the post Kujung play can be emphasized on the flower structure pattern as an indication of wrench faulting. This wrench fault is responsible for tearing apart the Rancak and O.K. Formations during intra Miocene.
